1. Aluminium is lightweight (but strong)

Lightweight doesn’t mean weak. In fact, aluminium is roughly one-third the weight of steel or copper (which translates directly into a faster, safer installation process).

Aluminium facades naturally resist corrosion. Timber eventually succumbs to rot and moisture, and steel battles rust, but aluminium reacts with oxygen to form a microscopic oxide layer on its surface. 

It acts as a permanent shield which helps prevent further oxidation. The transparent, protective skin is also self-healing: If the surface is scratched, the oxide layer simply reforms. 

This quality is particularly beneficial in the UK. The salt-laden air of coastal locations can degrade other facades, and in some high-pollution urban centres, there’s a small risk of acidic rain. 

Aluminium won’t degrade, often boasting a service life of 40 years or more with minimal intervention. 

3. Low-maintenance

Managing a property, especially a tenanted building, can be complex. 

The ongoing maintenance of a demanding exterior can quickly become inconvenient for residents, staff, customers, or even your team. In most cases, aluminium facade maintenance is straightforward.

An aluminium facade also serves as a building’s primary thermal barrier. Although the material is naturally conductive, these curtain walling systems are designed with thermal management in mind. 

Modern facades use advanced thermal breaks (typically reinforced polyamide strips) to create a physical bridge between the inner and outer frames. It effectively ‘breaks’ the path of heat transfer, so interiors are cool in summer and retain warmth in winter.

6. Aluminium is recyclable

Aluminium facades also make a strong case for sustainability. It’s a fully circular material, meaning it can be repurposed over and over again. 

The International Aluminium Institute states that aluminium can be recycled repeatedly with no loss of quality, and that almost 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today. 

When you look at the energy economics, aluminium becomes an even better option. Recycling aluminium requires only about 5% of the energy needed to produce aluminium from raw bauxite ore.
